An apple a day….  With the recent focus on sustainability, a trend seems to be starting with a push to grow your own food.  Colorado isn’t always thought of as a climate where crops would flourish. Although, it is a great place to grow many different types of fruit trees.  Just like any other tree in your landscape, all they really need is water, some fertilizer and a little tender loving care. Here are a few types of fruit trees that you could grow on your own.

Apples…

There are a wide variety of apples that do very well here.  From the old fashioned Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, and McIntosh to newer more popular varieties like Honeycrisp and Gala. If you like a more tart and crisp Apple, you may even think about a Granny Smith.  Growing an Apple tree is very easy. Certain steps need to be taken to ensure a pest free crop but by no means are they beyond what an average homeowner can do.  With a little knowledge and some time, anyone can produce a healthy crop of homegrown apples.

Peaches…

We all know that the western slope of Colorado is famous for their Peaches. We can grow them here too!  Reliance, Red Haven, and Veteran are all great tasting and easy to grow in our climate.  What better way to save on the family budget than to grow your own Peaches.  With a little care you can produce your own juicy and flavorful peaches.

Pear….

Ornamental flowering pears are a staple in the Colorado landscape business.  Why not grow a fruiting pear instead?  The tree is very hardy and can be a pretty good producer of fruit.  Pears that you would find in the grocery store such as Bartlett and Bosc do quite well.  Or, you could even go a little obscure and choose to grow an Asian variety such as 20th Century or Hosui which can be also be found in the stores at a very high price.  Wouldn’t it be nice to grow your own?

Plum….

There are many types of Plums that are great for the Colorado home orchardist.  From European plums such as Toka, or Pipestone to Japanese varieties like Santa Rosa and Satsuma, they all do well.  Also, Italian prune plums do very well and are self pollinating so they do not require an additional tree to create fruit.  Plums can be very pest resistant and taste great!

Cherry…

The best Cherries for our area are tart or pie cherries.  Meteor and Montmorency are the most common. Montmorency is not only a good tasting cherry but can be a beautiful tree.  The size is good for most smaller residential yards and it has a nice compact structure.

And don’t forget about berries….

Raspberries, Blackberries, Grapes, Currants, and Gooseberries all do very well here and are easy to grow.

As a homeowner in Colorado, it is possible to use even the smallest sized yard, or even a patio home, to create a sustainable landscape.  One that can produce both food and beauty for generations to come.
