In these fast-paced times, it's important for businesses to stay on top of the latest technology tools to keep in touch with their clients and customers. A good website and social networking through online communities, blogs, and forums are critical to building and maintaining a company's presence in the business world.
Have you been hearing the latest buzz? Tweet, tweeter, twit, Twitter!
Founded in 2006, Twitter (www.twitter.com) has now gained large exposure as its use by celebrities, politicians and news people is being widely reported. What is Twitter? Wikipedia describes it as:
"...a social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length."
It is used for quick, short (remember the 140 length restriction) posts with a social update such as "It's a beautiful day, I'm on my way to the park with my dog!" or with a microblog about what kind of season you think the Colorado Rockies are going to have.
The question is how can a business benefit from the Twitter phenomenon? Your clients/customers don't need to hear about the great latté you had that morning, however they would be interested in the latest market report for their neighborhood, special pricing for your product or about the community event coming up. You can be creative and "tweet" many different topics that would be picked up, and you will stay in contact with your group.
This past February, Rodney Rumford, a speaker at the "Gravity Summit on Social Media" stated:
"Marketers can use Twitter actively or passively, ...in the first case by reaching out with promotional messages, and in the second by setting up a "listening engine" that allows them to track consumer sentiment in public postings on the site." (www.mediapost.com, by Erik Sass, 2/27/09)
A company can address concerns and tweak business practices as it learns what is important to the consumer. At the same time, Rumford also emphasized that it's important to remember that "It's not a campaign, it's a conversation."
Twitter is a new and fun real-time messaging system for groups and friends. It may also be a good tool to grow your business presence and enter the "twittersphere".
